| | 🚛 Time to Pay the Toll: Could Tech Make Trucks Pay Their Fair Share? | GovTech As heavy-duty trucks continue to log more miles and cause disproportionate damage to U.S. highways, experts and policymakers are eyeing technology as the key to a fairer, smarter funding model. Here's what you need to know: Experts say trucks cause 10 to 20 times more wear and tear on roads than passenger vehicles—but fuel taxes haven’t kept up, especially as trucks get more efficient. From GPS-based telematics to vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tracking, tech offers scalable ways to measure real usage and ensure trucking companies contribute fairly. Carriers aren’t against change, but they’re asking for consolidated, easy-to-manage systems that won’t complicate reporting or add confusing fees. Programs like Oregon’s OReGO and Utah’s road usage charges are exploring per-mile fees. Others, like Colorado and Oklahoma, are running tech pilots with firms like Emovis. Charging all electric vehicles a flat $250 fee, as proposed in Congress, doesn’t reflect real road use—mileage-based solutions could offer more fairness for all.
🔧 Bottom line: Tech can make it easier, fairer, and smarter to fund the highways we all rely on — especially with the trucking industry carrying the heaviest load.
