| FSU vs. UF Research. Researchers at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering are using AI to detect defects in powder-based 3D printing – paving the way for smarter, more precise manufacturing. Meanwhile, UF celebrates a record-breaking year in innovation, which is a further validation of North Florida’s innovative ecosystem. While we did not do a side by side comparison, we figured both topics would grab your attention. Who do you think is winning in research?🎉

| | 🤖 AI Boosts 3D Printing Accuracy at FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. | FSU News A research team at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, led by Associate Professor Hui Wang, secured over $2.2M in funding from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) to improve defect detection in powder-based 3D printing using artificial intelligence. The team is exploring combinatorial generalization (CG), an advanced AI method that mimics how humans learn and connect patterns. This helps the AI predict and spot new kinds of defects, even ones it hasn’t directly seen before. ✨ Their work focuses on binder jetting, a fast, precise 3D printing method that uses a liquid binder to fuse powder into complex parts – used in aerospace, healthcare, the military, and more. The project includes strong collaboration with Penn State University and HP Inc., giving students access to hands-on training, high-performance computing tools, real-world data, and internships at HP’s 3D Printing and Digital Manufacturing Center of Excellence. By combining engineering expertise and AI innovation, the project aims to make manufacturing smarter and more accessible, with potential benefits that stretch beyond printing, including improved cybersecurity and enhanced system maintenance tools. 💻
