| Clouds and Codes. Before we dive into what’s up with Florida tech, we’re sending good vibes to our CEO, Julia, who is currently at UCF’s orientation for her oldest daughter who will major in Computer Engineering. On that note, Florida Engineering students are leveling up. From decoding flight data in the NSF’s Aviation Big Data Competition to building real-world tech at the Groundswell x AWS Hackathon, they’re bridging cloud tech and code like pros. The goal? Smarter travel, sharper skills, and career-ready experience.
Quick Summary In this 446th edition, for local & state tech: |

| Engineering Students Soar with Aviation Data Innovation. | FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Students from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering took part in the second Aviation Big Data Case Competition, a six-week challenge backed by the National Science Foundation and American Airlines. The goal? Use real airline data to solve real-world problems with the power of analytics and machine learning. Using anonymized booking and search data, students created smart algorithms to recommend destinations and optimize flight schedules – real tasks airlines face daily. Top teams, including SkyPredict, Pathfinders, and Katana, advanced to the final round held at American Airlines headquarters in Fort Worth, TX. They toured the Integrated Operations Center and learned how big data keeps flights running smoothly and efficiently. The challenge ended with a high-pressure, 8-hour hackathon, where students built predictive models for aircraft turn-time. Team Katana took the top spot, followed by SkyPredict and Pathfinders. The competition gave students a chance to apply what they’ve learned in class to real-world aviation problems – an experience that not only sharpened their skills but also opened doors for future careers in the growing field of aviation data science.

| Hack the Space Coast: Build, Solve, and Innovate | Space Coast Initiative From August 22 to 24, 2025, tech minds from all backgrounds will gather in Melbourne, FL, for a one-of-a-kind hackathon hosted by Groundswell and AWS. It’s more than just coding – it’s a hands-on sprint to create real-world solutions that could shape the future of Florida’s innovation coast. With two tracks, one for software (think AI, cloud, apps) and another for hardware + software (like robotics and IoT). Participants can tackle challenges that match their skills and interests – they can even pitch their problem to solve. Expert mentors and subject matter experts will guide teams through every step, from brainstorming to prototype, all while using tools like AWS and Groundswell’s Prototype Lab. Expect AWS credits, public pitch showcases, access to lab tools, and real-time feedback from industry leaders, investors, and engineers. The judging focuses on innovation, scalability, local relevance, and their commitment to turning ideas into impact. Open to students, professionals, startups, and curious first-timers – anyone with a drive to build, collaborate, and innovate is welcome. Registration closes August 8, two weeks ahead of the big event. Sign up now and get ready to make your mark on the Space Coast.
