| | π Cost-Per-$1,000 Study Highlights Elevated Insurance Rates in Florida. Are Costs Soaring? | InsuranceNewsNet Collectively, Florida-based property insurers charge significantly higher rates per $1,000 than companies headquartered outside the state charge. Owners of condominium units in Florida pay twice as much per $1,000 to insure their contents as homeowners pay to cover their entire structures and contents. A $500,000 home in South Florida βcarries much more risk of loss and would be priced much higher than $500,000 of total insured value up in Tallahassee, 20 miles inland,β said Stacey Giulianti, Chief Legal Officer at Boca Raton-based Florida Peninsula. Florida now leads the nation in homeowners insurance costs, with the average annual premium hitting $3,023, a 34% increase since 2022. This spike far exceeds the national inflation rate of 8%. Total premiums written in the state have jumped to $23B, even though policy counts rose only 4%. Some insurers kept rate hikes modest (e.g., ASI Preferred at +2.5%), while others surged, like Homesite (+80%) and Olympus (+53%). Premiums now range from $1,685 to over $5,600, depending on the insurer. As costs soar, Florida homeowners are paying more per $1,000 of coverage than anywhere else in the U.S. | Insurance Journal Bottom line: Floridaβs homeowners face insurance premiums at crisis levels, driven by storms, lawsuits, and industry practices. Though recent reforms show promise, real relief for consumers will likely take time and proactive action. π
π Main Findings Florida has the highest home insurance costs in the U.S. when measured by cost per $1,000 of coverage. The 2022 average for Florida: Premium: $2,901 Coverage: $305,000 Cost per $1,000: $9.51
National average cost per $1,000 of coverage: $4.44
