| Start your engines... and boosters. We may be in Nole territory, but there are plenty of Gator fans and “house divided” bumper stickers around town. Gator Nation is on cloud 9 after UF’s Men’s Basketball team won the NCAA National Championship last night. Congrats! First on deck, we zoom into how the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is using AI to make traffic safer and smarter. Then, we’re blasting off as ULA and Amazon prepare for the first launch of Project Kuiper, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown with SpaceX’s Starlink. Whether it’s AI-driven highways or satellite-fueled space rivalries, this edition is all about speed, strategy, and innovation. Buckle up—let’s go!

| | | 🛣️ FAMU-FSU Engineers Use AI to Improve Intersection Safety. | FSU News A team from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is tackling the problem of intersection safety with the development of PREDISS (Predictive Intersection Safety System), a cutting-edge AI-driven system designed to reduce crashes and save lives at high-risk intersections, which are responsible for 25% of traffic fatalities in the U.S. The PREDISS system integrates data-driven analytics, AI, and physics-based methods to predict vehicle trajectories, identify potential conflicts, and track both vehicles and pedestrians in real-time at intersections. It uses sensors, cameras, and wireless technology to forecast dangerous situations before they occur, providing a proactive safety approach. ⚠️ The project is entering an exciting phase with live testing at an intersection in partnership with the City of Tallahassee’s Regional Transportation Management Center. Real-world data from this test will help refine the system’s algorithms and further improve its predictive capabilities, moving the system closer to full deployment. After securing funding and recognition through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Intersection Safety Challenge, winning Stage 1A and Stage 1B prizes in 2024 and 2025, PREDISS is well on its way to transforming how intersection safety is approached using AI, with $266,666 in funding to continue the project’s development. 📈 This initiative is part of Florida’s commitment to smart traffic management and intelligent transportation systems. The team hopes to collaborate with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to expand the use of PREDISS, improving road safety statewide and helping prevent thousands of fatalities caused by intersection accidents each year.

| 🚀 ULA & Amazon Set First Project Kuiper Launch to Compete with Starlink. | Orlando Sentinel United Launch Alliance (ULA) is targeting a launch window at noon on April 9 to send 27 satellites into low-Earth orbit aboard an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, marking the first official launch of Amazon’s Project Kuiper. ✨ The launch is the first step in Amazon’s ambitious plan to deploy 3,232 satellites by 2029 to provide global satellite internet coverage and compete directly with SpaceX’s Starlink, which already operates nearly 6,500 satellites globally. Amazon has secured additional launches for Project Kuiper with ULA’s new Vulcan rocket, Blue Origin, Arianespace, and even SpaceX, to meet the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) deadline of placing half of its satellites in orbit by July 2026. 💫 The 27 satellites in this first launch will be the heaviest payload ever flown by an Atlas V rocket. These satellites will orbit Earth at an altitude of 392 miles, traveling at speeds of over 17,000 mph, and will play a crucial role in Amazon’s satellite internet service, expected to begin offering coverage by the end of 2025. To support this massive satellite deployment, Amazon is expanding its production facilities, including a new satellite processing center at Kennedy Space Center’s former Shuttle Landing Facility, to help accelerate the launch pace and meet its long-term deployment goals.
