BEST & BRIGHTEST

👏 The Best & Brightest Awards presented by Envision Credit Union. | World Class Schools

  • Established in 2006 by Ron Sachs of Sachs Media, the Best & Brightest Awards aim to celebrate and acknowledge the outstanding high school seniors in Leon County. Unlike typical scholarship programs, these awards consider more than just GPA. The diverse categories of the awards enable students who shine in specific areas to be recognized for their commitment and effort. Additionally, there is a strong focus on community service and civic responsibility.

  • The scholarship initiative is a collaboration among the public and private schools in the Leon County area, Sachs Media, Envision Credit Union, Tallahassee Democrat, and World Class Schools of Leon County.

  • Since the inception of the Best & Brightest Awards, a total of 2,716 deserving high school seniors and 655 eighth graders from Leon County have received more than $958,000 in cash scholarships. Major scholarships for seniors are given to three countywide winners across 15 distinct categories: $1,500 for first-place winners, $750 for runners-up, and $500 for those receiving honorable mentions. Additionally, the program provides $100 cash scholarships to all school-based winners, thanks to Envision Credit Union, the program’s main sponsor. | World Class Schools

  • “Twenty years ago, we created this community recognition awards program to recognize stellar Leon County students who have demonstrated great accomplishment both in the classroom and in service within the community,” said Ron Sachs, Chairman of Sachs Media and founder and sponsor of the Best & Brightest Awards. “These outstanding young leaders are an inspiration to us all with their altruistic service.”

  • Check out this year’s Winners and Finalists who have demonstrated their dedication and ability in a wide variety of disciplines. Also, Tal Dem highlighted that the First class continues to shine even 20 years after the launch of Best & Brightest. 🤩

🎓 Curtis Lawrence III graduates after making FAMU history. | FAMU News

  • Curtis Lawrence III was merely 16 years old when he first arrived at Florida A&M University in 2021, making history as the youngest student in his class. Four years later, he graduated at the age of 20 with a degree in Biology and a minor in Liberal Arts.

  • Lawrence, a native of Washington, D.C., had already captured national attention by graduating high school at the age of 16 with over $1.6M in scholarships. His outstanding academic performance granted him access to more than 14 universities, including prestigious Ivy League institutions such as Harvard and Yale. 🎉

  • “What really made me want to come to FAMU was that, during my visit, I really felt comfortable and at home,” Lawrence said. “It was really important for me with being so young, going somewhere where I felt like I would fit in.”

  • Lawrence is getting ready for his next academic journey at Villanova University. He is concentrating on his future in research, intending to become a professor and to invest in the next generation of thinkers just as FAMU invested in him.

  • “FAMU really brought out the best in me. I’m leaving here as a much different person,” he said. “It pushed me past my comfort zone, and I gained so many new experiences. I’m glad I chose to come here; it is truly a one-of-a-kind experience.”
