🏆🌪️ Triumph & Struggles. On this World Environment Day we congratulate the Tallahassee quintet who pushed their limits and conquered the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Meanwhile, we reflect on the 2024 twisters that left a lasting mark on Tallahassee’s restaurant scene, forcing some beloved spots to close their doors. 🏔️✨

ADVENTURE

MOUNTAINTOP ACHIEVEMENT

⛰️🥾 The Tallahassee quintet was 'pushed to their limits' as they successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Reaching the mountaintop is a monumental achievement. | Tal Dem

  • On April 20, five Tallahassee residents – Dr. Clement Allen, his daughter Jamila Allen, JoAnne Maltese, Sean Morgan, and Michael Stiles – summited Mt. Kilimanjaro after a seven-day, 19,341 ft. hike. All are Ironman Triathlon runners who trained and supported each other throughout the climb.

  • Fun Stat: Mt. Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest and the tallest free-standing mountain; only about 66% of climbers reach the summit, based on 30,000 attempts and yearly statistics.

  • Climbing required thorough planning: specialized gear, immunizations, and preparation for travel in Tanzania.

  • Teamwork helped them succeed, with members supporting and encouraging one another throughout the journey. “The camaraderie was fantastic,” Maltese said. “When one person would get tired, someone else would assist them and cheer them on to get them going again. And if one person ran out of water, the other had extra. We worked as a family, getting each other to the top.” The group was diverse, including two over 65, two Black members, and two women; diversity was key to their strength.

TWISTED CLOSURES

🌪️❤️‍🩹 Impact of the tornadoes: Restaurants in Tallahassee that shut down following the twisters of 2024. Hurricane season officially began on June 1st, and there’s talks of a possible named storm forming. Floridians are now more serious about preparedness (Yahoo). While tornadoes are rare, last year was a different case with impacts to the local business community. | Tal Dem

  • Last year was especially tough for local restaurateurs and patrons alike, as they faced the disappointment of yet another dining spot closing its doors.

  • What began as temporary closures became permanent when a trio of tornadoes hit Tallahassee on May 10, 2024. Many of these owners were already facing challenges before the storm, but its devastating impact ultimately sealed their fate.

  • The tornadoes worsened existing struggles for local restaurants, making recovery even tougher for Tallahassee’s dining community.

Here are the restaurants to which we bid farewell (though some temporarily) last May:

  1. Brooklyn Pizza | Reopened in former Solle's Pizza – 2035 W. Pensacola St.

  2. Burrito Boarder | Empaisanas Tallahassee – 2065 W. Pensacola St.

  3. City Dogs Cafe and All Saints Art Station – 903 Railroad Ave.

  4. Chatarras – 3348 Mahan Dr.

  5. Sliders: A Sandwich Revolution – 1122 Thomasville Rd.

  6. Taco Republik – 1122-8 Thomasville Rd.
