| | RESEARCH FEMALE FIREFIGHTER PPE |
|
| | π©πΌβπ Dr. Josephine Bolaji and Dr. Meredith McQuerry published a new article about wildland female firefighting PPE sizing. | FSU - JMC via LI Post The article titled "US female firefighter anthropometrics versus wildland firefighting protective clothing sizing standards" was recently released in the International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics. π§―βοΈ The research was funded by FEMA through the Fire Prevention and Safety Program. This is the first study of its kind to evaluate the sizing of PPE for female wildland firefighters. The purpose of this research was to assess the adequacy of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1977 sizing system for wildland female firefighters. They analyzed ten body measurements within the upper and lower torso garment sizing ranges. Overall, the results indicate that the NFPA 1977 standard is still not adequately inclusive of the US female firefighter demographic based on the sample analysis. Improvements are needed to boost firefighter performance and safety, as well as to mitigate the increased risk of injury faced by female firefighters. | Firefighter Nation Dr. Josephine Bolaji is a postdoctoral fellow in retail entrepreneurship at Florida State Universityβs Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship. She earned her PhD in textile and apparel science from the University of Alberta in 2023. Her expertise includes garment sizing using anthropometrics, textile material testing, natural fiber surface modification, and water sustainability in textiles. Dr. Meredith McQuerry is the Carol E. Avery Associate Professor in the retail entrepreneurship program at Florida State Universityβs Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship. With nearly 15 years of experience, she specializes in personal protective clothing (PPC) for firefighters and first responders.
