| | π Unseen expenses of home ownership in 2025. | Bankrate Buying a home is the biggest single expense most people will ever undertake. But a lot of new homeowners are surprised to find that, after they have the keys in hand, the costs just keep going β and theyβre adding up to a considerable sum. Bankrateβs 2025 study reveals that hidden costs of owning a single-family home amount to $21,400 annually. Expenses are often overlooked when budgeting to buy, beyond just the price and mortgage. In Florida, homeowners pay even more, with annual upkeep and hidden expenses totaling around $24,713. Thatβs why consumers are particularly feeling the pain in the form of home maintenance costs β the highest of their hidden costs at $8,808 each year. Thatβs almost 2 times the cost of utilities/energy ($4,494), double the cost of property taxes ($4,316), 4 times the cost of home insurance ($2,267), and 6 times the cost of internet/cable ($1,515). The bottom line: "Buying is just the beginning," researchers reported. "The squeeze on wallets intensifies after one becomes a homeowner."
