| | π₯βοΈ From Heat Index Warnings to Cold Season Forecast | Tal Dem While August and early hurricane season activity have started off slower than usual, seasonal forecasts still predict an above-normal year overall, driven by warm ocean temperatures and favorable atmospheric conditions for later storm development. Local authorities stress readiness regardless, because a single impactful storm can change everything. Fortunately, this August will begin with minimal clowning from the Atlantic, Gulf, or Caribbean β staying pretty chill for now. A couple of tropical waves are out there, but dry air and calm skies are keeping things quiet. By August, weβre deep into peak hurricane season, driven mainly by tropical waves, cyclonic systems that form in the trade winds off Africa and drift west through summer and fall. 60% chance of a named-storm landfall: August is the ramp-up to peak hurricane season, with U.S. major hurricane landfalls quadrupling from early to late month, all while the Southeast bakes in relentless heat and humidity. Trivia: Over the past 175 years, around 30 major hurricanes have made the U.S. landfall in August, most of them slamming into the western Gulf. π
