| Florida is Hot. Full disclosure, we do not have any team members currently watching Netflix’s “Too Hot to Handle.” However, we are watching Florida’s weather. With the recent heat wave hitting the Southeast, even the energy-hungry FSU MagLab had to tap the brakes and cool off. Meanwhile, over on Space Coast, Florida’s rocket activity is heating up in the space race. From sweating circuits to soaring spacecraft, the Sunshine State sure knows how to make headlines.
Quick Summary In this 456th edition, for local & state tech: Local: MagLab Affected by Heatwave Space: Space Coast on Track for 100 Launches Featured: AERO | Domi Station FL Tech Events

| | ☀️ Heat Wave Hits Hard: Even FSU's Power-Hungry MagLab Had to Cool Off. Despite the urban myth about the lab’s ability to prevent hurricanes from landing at the capital, the MagLab is turned off during extreme weather. | Tal Dem Tallahassee has been baking in extreme summer heat, and it’s not just people feeling the pressure. The recent heat wave has pushed the city’s energy demands to the edge, affecting everything from household cooling systems to some of its most advanced facilities. 🏭 One unexpected example? Florida State University’s National High Magnetic Field Laboratory — better known as the MagLab — reportedly had to scale back operations due to the intense strain on the power grid. Known globally for its high-powered magnets and cutting-edge experiments, the lab is no stranger to massive electricity use, but even it had to take a step back. The MagLab runs experiments that require a consistent, high-powered flow of energy, often supporting breakthroughs in physics, materials science, and biology. But during a heat wave, when nearly every building in the city is running air conditioning at full blast, even the most robust energy systems can get overloaded. ⚠️ While the downtime was likely brief, it serves as a reminder of how interconnected our infrastructure really is. As temperatures climb higher and higher, even top-tier research institutions can’t completely avoid the effects of climate stress and growing power consumption. Fingers crossed, we do not get hit by named storms this hurricane season.

| 🚀 Florida’s Space Coast on Track for Record-Breaking Year. | Florida Today As of early August 2025, Florida's Space Coast has completed 66 orbital missions, putting it on a record pace to easily surpass 2024's total of 93 launches and potentially exceed 100 for the first time. ✨ This rapid growth is driven by satellite internet constellations, primarily SpaceX's Starlink network (over 7,945 satellites), which makes up the bulk of the year's flights. Amazon's Project Kuiper is also a key contributor to the launch manifest. In addition to internet satellites, the year has featured diverse and high-profile missions, including the maiden flight of Blue Origin's New Glenn, crewed launches to the ISS, commercial lunar landers, and national security payload. Florida's launch rate reflects a global surge in demand for access to space. By the end of 2024, nearly 11,900 satellites were in orbit — a 454% increase since 2018 — fueling the need for launch capacity worldwide. 🌐
