🫀 CasNx Cleans Up Organ Transplants | UF Innovate The University of Florida startup CasNx is redefining what’s possible in organ transplantation through the power of CRISPR-based genome editing. Their innovative technology works to clean and repair donor organs before they ever reach a patient. 🏥 Founded by a UF chemical engineering professor and a transplant surgeon, CasNx focuses on using CRISPR tools to remove viruses and other harmful elements from donor organs while they’re preserved on a pump. This not only makes the organs safer but also significantly reduces the risk of rejection. The team compares their technology to a “dishwasher for organs”—a process that doesn’t just keep organs alive outside the body but actively improves their condition, preparing them for a smoother and more successful transplant. By targeting viral DNA and other infection sources, CasNx aims to prevent post-transplant infections before they even happen, offering a powerful new layer of protection for patients with weakened immune systems. 🧬 Featured on UF Innovate’s Tech Tuesday segment, CasNx shows how science and entrepreneurship can work hand in hand to create life-changing medical innovations—and a future where organ transplants are safer, faster, and more effective than ever.
