🚀 BRAG-Worthy Breakthroughs: USF Startups Win Innovation Funding. | USFRI Newsroom

  • Three startups affiliated with the Tampa Bay Technology Incubator have been awarded up to $25,000 each through the Bull Ring Accelerator Grants (BRAG), funded by the USF Foundation and Research Foundation. These grants aim to support early-stage companies with high-impact innovations in health and technology. ⚙️
  • MediMirror, founded by former USF Health researcher Katharine Hanlon, is developing a mirror that uses polarized light to reveal both surface and subsurface skin features. This allows for earlier detection of pigment issues, spider veins, and other skin concerns — empowering users to monitor their skin health from home. Currently in the prototype phase, the product is set to launch in late 2025.
  • Quantum Silicon Clocks, led by USF Physics professor Denis Karaiskaj, is creating a smaller, energy-efficient atomic clock using silicon. Unlike traditional chip-sized atomic clocks, this version could be integrated into consumer electronics, GPS systems, aerospace devices, and more — offering precision timekeeping with lower cost and power consumption. ⚡
  • SPKL, co-founded by Arnold Estrada and Ashwin Parthasarathy from USF’s Department of Electrical Engineering, is working on a portable device to detect strokes by measuring differences in blood flow between the brain’s hemispheres. Their goal is to reduce the critical time between stroke onset and treatment, improving patient outcomes with a low-cost, wearable solution.
  • With BRAG support, these startups are advancing technologies that blend scientific research with real-world impact — moving from lab to life with purpose.
